Quick Overview
The Darkspear are a jungle-troll people whose later history was shaped by displacement, Sen’jin’s leadership, and an alliance with Thrall. They belong to the greater Gurubashi-descended world but did not follow every policy of the old jungle empire. After leaving Stranglethorn they struggled for a home and settled near the new Horde in Kalimdor. Their distinct political identity emerged long after Tyr, Kith’ix, and the earliest empires.
Full History
Sen’jin’s fate on the islands anchors the Darkspear’s break with their earlier homeland and their survival under Vol’jin.
The Darkspear belong to the family of jungle trolls whose distant roots lie in the old southern troll civilizations. Yet their more immediate history is not simply the history of Zul’Gurub retold under another name. The Darkspear lived through the collapse of imperial unity and the pressures of stronger neighbors, becoming a relatively small people under the leadership of Sen’jin.
In the original Horde account, Thrall encountered Sen’jin’s people on their islands during the orcs’ journey across the sea. Human pressure and supernatural island dangers put the Darkspear in grave peril. Sen’jin died, and his son Vol’jin inherited responsibility for a displaced people who could no longer preserve their old homes by remaining where they were.
Vol’jin brought the survivors into alliance with Thrall and the new Horde. They settled in the Echo Isles and on the coast of Durotar, then faced new difficulties when Zalazane turned against them. Their position near Orgrimmar is thus the product of recent exile, alliance, and contested survival—not an unbroken occupation of every former jungle-troll territory.
The earlier Aqir–Troll War explains why the Gurubashi sphere became important in troll history, but it does not directly dictate Darkspear beliefs in the Third War. Their witch doctors, shadow hunters, clan loyalties, and dealings with the Horde should be understood within their own history and the constraints of the original game world.
