Quick Overview

Orgrimmar is the capital Thrall raised in Durotar and named for Orgrim Doomhammer. Orcs, Darkspear trolls, and other allies made it the center of a New Horde seeking an honorable life after exile and war. Its walls recall the struggle against Daelin Proudmoore and the need to defend a fragile new nation.

Full History

Orgrimmar rose from the red rock of Durotar after Thrall led the New Horde to Kalimdor. Its name honors Orgrim Doomhammer, the former warchief whose example and legacy mattered deeply to Thrall's struggle to free the orcs from the camps of Lordaeron. Yet the city was founded to mark a break from the Old Horde's destructive ambitions. The orcs had crossed from Draenor through the Dark Portal, fought two wars, and endured defeat and imprisonment. Thrall's movement sought to recover clan honor without returning to Gul'dan's demonic bargains, and Orgrimmar became the most visible expression of that effort.

The site was difficult: dry canyons, scarcity of timber, and exposed approaches required immense labor and cooperation. Orcish craftsmen fortified the Valley of Strength and the city's gates, while other districts gave space to warriors, traders, shamans, and allies. The Darkspear trolls under Vol'jin made their home alongside the orcs after abandoning their endangered islands, and the tauren alliance with Cairne Bloodhoof connected the new capital to Mulgore. This gathering of peoples made Orgrimmar more than the city of a single clan. It was the political center of a New Horde bound together by debt, survival, and hopes for a different future.

Those hopes were quickly tested. During *The Frozen Throne*, Daelin Proudmoore's forces attacked the nascent Horde and the surrounding settlements. Rexxar and his companions helped defend Thrall's people, while Jaina Proudmoore rejected her father's war. The surviving peace was uneasy, and other threats remained within and beyond Durotar. Orgrimmar's barracks and fortifications thus reflect circumstances far more precarious than the permanence of stone might suggest.

In the 2004 world, the city is a military and commercial center tied to the Barrens and the wider Horde. It should not be described with later districts, modern sieges, or leadership changes from subsequent expansions. Its enduring story is the attempt of a people once used as instruments of conquest to establish a place they can call their own, while keeping open the difficult question of what honor will require of them next.
