Quick Overview

The Hinterlands shelter the Wildhammer dwarves at Aerie Peak after their exile from Grim Batol. Ancient forest troll communities still control important ruins and passes, preserving memories of much older conflicts with elves and human kingdoms. The region's wooded isolation also conceals druidic mysteries and disputed borders.

Full History

The Hinterlands are wooded highlands northeast of Hillsbrad, separated from much of the settled world by steep approaches and difficult roads. This isolation shelters peoples with strikingly different histories. At Aerie Peak, the Wildhammer dwarves have made a new home after leaving Grim Batol, their former capital, in the aftermath of the War of the Three Hammers. Rather than follow the Bronzebeards beneath the mountains, the Wildhammers developed a distinct life in open air, with close ties to their gryphons and the forests around their stronghold. Their settlement gives the eastern Alliance a powerful foothold, but the neighboring slopes remain contested.

The trolls of the Hinterlands are not a single people acting with one purpose. Forest troll communities preserve older ties to the Amani lands and the conflicts between trolls, high elves, and human kingdoms. The ruins of Jintha'Alor speak to the endurance of local troll power; other groups occupy their own settlements in the hills. The original-world political divisions should remain distinct. Claims involving Revantusk Village or its availability in a given patch require particular care, since later-added facilities must not be backdated into the launch state. The Wildhammer presence also intersects with old Second War alliances and border conflicts in northern Lordaeron.

Seradane and its mysterious association with the Emerald Dream add another strand to the region's history, but the details must stay within the evidence available to the 2004 world. To the west, the approaches toward Aerie Peak connect the woods to the lingering wars around Alterac and the Plaguelands. The Hinterlands therefore offer a meeting place between a displaced dwarven clan, enduring troll societies, and ancient natural mysteries. It is not merely a late-game wilderness: its ridgelines contain the consequences of the dwarven civil war and the far older human–elf–troll struggles.

The slopes around Aerie Peak also complicate the broader idea of a single dwarven homeland. Bronzebeards, Wildhammers, and Dark Irons descend from shared origins, yet their capitals and alliances diverged dramatically. The Hinterlands show what it meant for one branch to rebuild its identity beyond Ironforge's stone halls.
