Quick Overview
The Amani formed the great forest-troll power of northern ancient Kalimdor and later the northern Eastern Kingdoms. Their traditions centered on territory, warrior authority, and reverence for the loa, while their capital at Zul’Aman became a symbol of independence. Later accounts identify the defeat of Kith’ix as a formative ancient victory near that site. By the beginning of original WoW the Amani retained Zul’Aman but had lost much of their empire to the high elves and the human–elven Troll Wars.
Full History
This chapter emphasizes Zul’jin’s Second War alliance with the orcs, centuries after the Amani lost the wider forest empire.
The Amani became a people of northern forests long before any human kingdom could contest them. In the Blizzard Troll Compendium the forest empire took its name from its strongest tribe; the same name could therefore describe both a political civilization and one particular ruling group. Other forest tribes shared aspects of the old culture without always obeying its capital. They were not simply inhabitants of remote green ruins: they were the descendants of a kingdom whose territory once included lands later claimed by Quel’Thalas and Lordaeron.
Their ancient religious life belonged to the broader troll reverence for the loa, and their warriors defended shrines, hunting grounds, and tribal sovereignty. Later Chronicle-based history connects the Amani to the pursuit and defeat of Kith’ix, the surviving C’Thraxxi who had escaped Tyr. In that account the battle helps explain why the site of Zul’Aman became sacred and politically enduring. Recent versions add more specific combatants and religious details that should remain labeled as even later material rather than retroactively inserted into the original empire’s recorded beliefs.
The Highborne exiles who crossed the sea eventually settled farther north and founded Quel’Thalas in lands the forest trolls considered their own. Elven magical defenses repelled repeated assaults; then the great Troll Wars drew human Arathor into the conflict. A catastrophic combined human–elven victory reduced Amani power and pushed branches of the old empire into more distant forest strongholds. The memory of lost land helped shape an enduring hostility toward the high elves.
During the Second War Zul’jin allied his forest trolls with the Horde, seeking the destruction of Quel’Thalas. The alliance proved unsatisfactory, and many tribes abandoned the orcs after their defeat. At original WoW’s opening the Amani still held Zul’Aman, the Revantusk maintained their own position in the Hinterlands, and Firetree and Smolderthorn trolls were tied to the Dark Horde in Blackrock Spire. The Amani’s history therefore contains several separate fractures, and none should be misleadingly dated to Tyr’s death itself.
