Full History
Driven from Ironforge after the dwarven civil war, Khardros Wildhammer led his clan north through the mountain passes of Dun Algaz. The Wildhammers had lost the ancestral capital, but they had not lost the skill to build another kingdom. In the distant stronghold of Grim Batol, they established a new home that grew wealthy and formidable.
Their prosperity did not end the grievances of the Dark Irons. Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan planned to strike both rival clans at once: his own forces marched against Ironforge while his wife Modgud led an assault upon Grim Batol. She brought sorcery into the Wildhammer halls, spreading terror and darkness as her army fought its way inward. Khardros rallied his warriors against the invasion and killed Modgud, breaking the attacking force.
Even that victory carried a lasting cost. Modgud's darkness tainted Grim Batol, and the Wildhammers would not remain in the stronghold they had so fiercely defended. Many followed Khardros farther north to the Hinterlands, where the clan found a different way of life and a new bond with the gryphons. Grim Batol survived as a monument to their bravery and their exile, not as the home their founder had intended.
