Full History
The gates and passes of Dun Algaz figured in the history of the dwarves long before the orcish invasions. When the War of the Three Hammers ended with Bronzebeard control of Ironforge, Khardros Wildhammer led his exiled people north through the mountain barriers. Beyond them he founded a new kingdom at Grim Batol, hoping to recover what his clan had lost.
The Wildhammers prospered there until Modgud's Dark Iron invasion brought sorcery and devastation into their halls. Although Khardros defeated the attackers, the city was left tainted, and many of his people traveled farther north toward the Hinterlands. Dun Algaz thus lay on the route of two major migrations: the first born of defeat, the second following a costly victory.
Later wars restored the pass's strategic importance. The roads through Khaz Modan mattered to the Alliance as human and dwarf forces resisted the Horde. The old mountain gates had never been merely a boundary between regions; they marked an opening through which the dwarves had carried both armies and their search for new homes.
