Quick Overview
The Wetlands link Khaz Modan to the northern Eastern Kingdoms through Menethil Harbor and fragile mountain crossings. Grim Batol recalls both the Wildhammer dwarves' lost capital and the Dragonmaw clan's enslavement of the red Dragon Aspect Alexstrasza. Dwarven expeditions and the surviving threats of the Second War make the marsh a living historical frontier.
Full History
The Wetlands sit between the high ground of Khaz Modan and the kingdoms to the north, a rain-soaked threshold through which travelers pass on their way to Ironforge. The coastal port of Menethil Harbor offers one of the Alliance's vital maritime connections; inland, the road winds through bogs, bridges, and broken dwarven works before climbing toward Dun Algaz. The Thandol Span farther north is another piece of this strategic chain. Its exposed crossing carries the memory of war as well as commerce, making the region a frontier rather than a simple stretch of marsh between settled lands.
Near the eastern highlands stands Grim Batol, once a Wildhammer stronghold and then a ruin shadowed by the War of the Three Hammers. Long after the Wildhammers left, it became the place where the Dragonmaw clan imprisoned Alexstrasza, the red Dragon Aspect, and forced the red dragonflight into the Old Horde's service. The account told in the original-era novel *Day of the Dragon* follows the effort to free her and the battle surrounding that imprisonment. The presence of Dragonmaw orcs in the Wetlands is therefore no incidental monster placement. It is the remnant of a cruelty that reached across the Second War and into the later uneasy peace.
The Wetlands have still other histories. Ironbeard's Tomb and the scattered excavation sites reflect dwarven fascination with their past. The hills harbor raptors, gnolls, and aggressive dragonkin, while scattered human and dwarven travelers rely on the harbor and patrols for protection. The ruined Dun Modr and troubled crossings reveal the vulnerability of old routes after successive invasions. In the original world, the Wetlands connect the living Alliance with its battered past: a working seaport, broken bridges, a dragon-haunted former capital, and the dangerous journey between them. Any later changes to the zone's coast, bridges, or settlements belong outside the patch 1.1 account.
