Quick Overview
Dun Modr guarded the Thandol Span, the road linking Khaz Modan to the northern kingdoms. Dark Iron attacks revived the ancient divisions of the dwarven clans and threatened a crossing vital to trade and reinforcement. The defenders faced a shattered bridge, fallen soldiers, and a struggle to hold the northern frontier.
Full History
The road north from Khaz Modan depended on dwarf engineering as much as armed strength. The Thandol Span connected the Wetlands with Arathi and helped maintain trade between Ironforge and the northern kingdoms. Dun Modr guarded that approach, a military outpost built around a crossing too important to abandon lightly.
The War of the Three Hammers had ended without healing the hatred between the Dark Irons and their kin. Generations after the competing clans fought for Ironforge, Dark Iron forces returned to threaten the routes leading north. The struggle was not simply for a patch of marshland: control of the crossing meant control of reinforcements, merchants, and the movement of soldiers between the southern and northern Eastern Kingdoms.
When Dark Iron attackers pressed the defenders of Dun Modr, the fighting reached the Thandol Span itself. An explosion damaged the bridge, dwarf soldiers fell, and scouts sent to investigate failed to return. The garrison could not secure the crossing while also protecting its own position. The old division among the dwarves had become a continuing threat to the roads that once connected their kingdoms.
