Full History

At the beginning of the original World of Warcraft, Stormwind looks like the capital of a kingdom that has survived its worst years. Its walls stand again, the Cathedral welcomes worshippers, and soldiers hold the roads beyond the city. Behind the ceremony of a restored monarchy, however, there is a disturbing absence. King Varian Wrynn is missing. His young son Anduin has a place at court, Highlord Bolvar Fordragon carries grave responsibilities, and the influence of Lady Katrana Prestor complicates any attempt to understand what has happened. The public face of the kingdom conceals a problem reaching well beyond its gates.

The search opens as a discreet errand from the Cathedral of Light. Bishop DeLavey seeks someone able to follow a missing diplomat without attracting attention. The inquiries pass through modest contacts rather than a great council: a fisherman, city acquaintances, and people who know the underworld's routes. The trail leads from Stormwind toward Duskwood and north to Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands. Those places are not arbitrary stops. They show a kingdom dependent on roads, ports, and private arrangements whose loyalty cannot always be assumed.

In Menethil the investigation reaches a smuggler called Tapoke 'Slim' Jahn. Pressed to explain his part in the affair, he reveals that the supposedly missing diplomat was King Varian himself. The discovery changes every earlier encounter. What seemed like routine intelligence work becomes a question of royal succession and the vulnerability of Stormwind to conspiracy. Slim's information points to a man named Hendel, who entered the king's journey through maritime contacts connected to Theramore. The clues therefore carry the search across the sea to Jaina Proudmoore's settlement in Dustwallow Marsh.

Theramore is politically delicate ground. Its ruler has built an uneasy peace with Thrall's Horde, while its soldiers have ties to old human kingdoms and ships that cross the eastern waters. Commander Samaul and Archmage Tervosh help locate Private Hendel. The confrontation draws Jaina herself into the investigation; Hendel is subdued and taken into custody. The immediate conspiracy has yielded a culprit and important testimony, but the whole story of Varian's disappearance is not resolved by this exchange. The original chain deliberately leaves the player with an unanswered royal mystery.

This is what makes *The Missing Diplomat* valuable to the history archive. It links Stormwind's absent ruler and young heir to Duskwood, Wetlands, Kul Tiras mariners, and Theramore without supplying later-retcon explanations as if they were known at launch. The kingdom's leaders are fighting political uncertainty as surely as soldiers elsewhere are fighting gnolls and orcs. The ending belongs to that moment in history: a court still waiting for its king and a trail of questions extending across two continents.
