Full History
The dwarven kingdoms of Khaz Modan were shaped by mountains, workshops and hard-won routes through dangerous country. Yet the survivors of those kingdoms could not rely on roads alone. Menethil Harbor developed as a connection between the Wetlands and the wider sea, allowing goods and travelers to move where the bogs and broken highlands made land passage difficult. Its existence reflected the needs of a people whose old homeland had become part of a much larger struggle.
During the wars with the Horde, Khaz Modan's occupied settlements and mountain passes showed how vulnerable a kingdom could be if its roads were seized. The harbor's role grew alongside the Alliance's need to connect distant communities. After the Third War, refugees and surviving allies crossed between the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, adding new importance to maritime routes. Theramore and the night elven lands became part of a political geography that earlier dwarven generations had not faced.
Menethil's story is therefore one of adaptation rather than a famous last stand. War changed the scale of the distances its ships needed to bridge, and the settlement helped scattered allies remain in contact after the destruction of much of the old human north. Its harbor was built for movement, and movement became essential to survival.
