Quick Overview
Dustwallow Marsh became the site of Jaina Proudmoore's Theramore settlement after the Third War. Daelin Proudmoore's attack on Thrall's Horde tested the peace, forcing Jaina to choose against her father's campaign. Brackenwall, dragonkin, and Onyxia's hidden lair add competing powers to the marshland border.
Full History
Dustwallow Marsh occupies a watery frontier between the Horde's new inland settlements and the human expedition that crossed the sea during the Third War. Jaina Proudmoore founded Theramore as a refuge and foothold after the struggle against the Burning Legion. Unlike Stormwind or Lordaeron, it was a new human community built in unfamiliar marshland alongside the very Horde Jaina had once fought. That proximity made the settlement a test of whether the cooperation forged at Mount Hyjal could endure ordinary political pressure. The waterways, islands, and difficult interior roads left every outpost vulnerable.
The greatest test came when Admiral Daelin Proudmoore arrived with Kul Tiran forces and tried to destroy Thrall's New Horde. In *The Frozen Throne*, Rexxar and his allies helped Thrall resist the offensive, while Jaina refused to support her father's campaign. Daelin fell, and Theramore endured under Jaina, burdened by the cost of that divided loyalty. The history of the marsh is therefore not merely the history of a port: it is the story of a daughter who chose a fragile peace over her father's war and a settlement living beside people it had good reason to mistrust.
Beyond Theramore, the Stonemaul ogres and the remnants of their dispossession, the Horde's Brackenwall presence, marsh beasts, and dragonkin complicate the region. Onyxia's Lair also lies hidden in the marsh; her covert manipulation of Stormwind connects this distant corner of Kalimdor to royal politics across the sea. Original-era quests involving kidnappings, military tension, and disappearing travelers should be preserved in their period context. Mudsprocket and other later-added conveniences must not silently appear in the patch 1.1 version. Dustwallow remains a wet and uneasy borderland where the decisions made after the Third War continue to carry personal and political consequences.
Theramore's harbors and towers make the settlement an important connection to the Eastern Kingdoms, while the interior marshlands remain difficult for either Jaina's troops or the Horde to patrol. This divide between a fortified coastal city and a hostile, loosely held inland frontier is essential to the zone's immediate political character.
