Full History

Thousand Needles is a maze of stone spires and dry canyons, where settlements cling to heights that are difficult to storm. The tauren outpost of Freewind Post occupies one of those pinnacles, and its position reveals the military logic of life here: enemies approaching across the canyon floor can be seen before they reach the narrow bridges and lifts. The zone lies south of the Barrens and north of Tanaris, making it a passage between the New Horde's central heartland and the great desert to the south. At the original-world beginning, this passage is dangerous but indispensable.

The Grimtotem tauren maintain a substantial presence at Darkcloud Pinnacle. Their relationship to the Bloodhoof leadership in Mulgore is strained, and their expansion here highlights disagreements within the tauren people rather than a war between unrelated races. Centaur and harpies also inhabit the canyons, while the Razorfen domains to the north reach toward the region's older conflicts. The cliffs preserve sacred and practical places for tauren hunters, and their elevation makes them more than scenic obstacles. Control of a lift, bridge, or ridge can decide whether a community is protected or cut off.

To the southeast the Shimmering Flats formed a salt basin where goblin and gnomish engineers staged dangerous races and mechanical competitions. That odd enclave of commerce and rivalry provides a contrast to the tribal disputes farther north. It also shows how different kinds of travelers used the difficult southern reaches of Kalimdor. Its historic character lies in the collision of tauren politics, frontier trade, and the geography that forces every inhabitant to bargain with towering stone.

Control of the pinnacles also gave the high settlements practical advantages over invading forces: narrow ascents could be watched and supplies protected far above the canyon floor. The impressive structures at Freewind and Darkcloud therefore record humanlike political decisions by the tauren communities, not just impressive geological scenery.
