Full History

The tauren had wandered under the threat of centaur attacks for generations before the Third War brought them into alliance with Thrall. The new friendship gave Cairne Bloodhoof's people a chance to hold Mulgore and build Thunder Bluff. Yet a capital could not protect every route and tribe spread across central Kalimdor.

Freewind Post arose in Thousand Needles as part of that broader effort to hold territory. The mesas offered tauren defenders a position above narrow canyon approaches, useful in a country where movement through the valleys could expose travelers to hostile bands. The post linked the wider tauren homeland to routes reaching the southern Barrens and the deserts beyond.

Its founding marked a change in the tauren's circumstances. A people driven repeatedly from place to place were creating fixed outposts that could be defended and supplied. That did not end the danger from their neighbors, nor did it make the tauren an expansionist empire. It gave scattered communities a better chance to survive without always having to flee.
