Quick Overview

The Galak centaur occupy the canyons and mesas of Thousand Needles, beyond the centaur heartland of Desolace. Their settlements at Splithoof Crag and Camp E'thok threaten the routes linking tauren communities with the southern Barrens. They embody the expansion of centaur pressure across Kalimdor after the clans divided. Their continued raiding helps explain why the security of Thunder Bluff did not end the tauren's struggle with centaur warbands.

Full History

The Galak belong to the same divided centaur world that grew from the union of Zaetar and Princess Theradras. In Desolace the oldest clans fought for control of the ancestral plains; elsewhere their riders pushed into the lands of the tauren. The Galak became established in Thousand Needles, a maze of stone columns and narrow canyons south of the Barrens. The reasons and exact date of that movement are not securely preserved, but their presence shows how widely the centaur struggle had spread.

There, steep cliffs might appear to protect a traveler. In practice the Galak occupied approaches through the canyon and established positions at Splithoof Crag and Camp E'thok. Roads through Thousand Needles are narrow enough that armed riders can threaten passage from one region of Kalimdor to another. The Galak exploited that landscape against tauren caravans, whose movement depended upon keeping open the southern routes. Warfare here was not a grand battle between kingdoms. It was the recurring danger that turned the journey between allied settlements into a military problem.

The tauren had already suffered much from centaur expansion. During the Third War, Cairne Bloodhoof's people were pursued by centaur while searching for a safer homeland. Thrall and his orcs helped them survive that crisis, and the tauren's later alliance with the new Horde gave them allies strong enough to resist attacks that had once driven them from their camps. Yet the creation of a home in Mulgore could not make every centaur warband vanish. The Galak still remained to the south, separated from other clans by distance but not by hostility toward their neighbors.

Thousand Needles also contained non-centaur communities with their own interests, including the tauren outpost at Freewind Post. That outpost's precarious location among the needles demonstrates the difference between holding a fortified settlement and securing all the land around it. Every trade route, caravan and wandering family passed through a contested landscape. The Galak were therefore part of the larger political geography of the Horde's early Kalimdor, even without serving another power.

At the opening of World of Warcraft, the Galak are an independent centaur danger around the canyon settlements. Accounts of all the clans submitting to a later high khan belong elsewhere, not to this time. The Galak's history is the smaller, persistent war left behind by a long migration: the tauren found a place to stand, but their road south still ran past centaur spears.
