Quick Overview

Harpy groups inhabit Kalimdor and contest the routes used by its expanding settlements. The Witchwing harpies of the northern Barrens raid caravans supplying the Horde's communities. Their organized leadership prompts Darsok Swiftdagger to plan a campaign reaching from lower-ranking fighters to Serena Bloodfeather.

Full History

The Horde's establishment in the Barrens depends on goods moving between its scattered settlements. Witchwing harpies exploit that dependence by attacking caravan supplies. For the defenders at the Crossroads, the raids are a continuing drain on the resources needed to keep the settlement connected with its neighbors. The conflict develops along transport routes as well as around the harpies' nesting grounds, placing the survival of a new territorial network in tension with an armed population already able to strike across it.

Darsok attributes the attacks to an earlier killing. Serena Bloodfeather's sister, Bloodfeather, had been slain by Rexxar, and he believes the raids are Serena's revenge. The violence therefore carries a memory of the Horde's establishment rather than beginning with a shipment's disappearance. A victory for its champion has left a surviving relative determined to make its communities suffer. Darsok's proposed answer will continue that cycle by targeting Serena herself.

Darsok Swiftdagger studies the nests before proposing a response. He concludes that the Witchwings have a hierarchy and wants to work upward through it. The initial attacks are directed at harpies and roguefeathers; further efforts target their lieutenants. His approach treats the raids as the work of an organized group. Reducing its numbers alone is not his entire objective. He intends to weaken the links through which its leadership coordinates resistance.

Serena Bloodfeather is the intended final target of that campaign. Her position gives the local conflict a named leader and a proposed culmination, but the request to kill her is still a request. The raids and the response together reveal the political geography of the northern Barrens: the Crossroads seeks secure circulation of supplies, while the Witchwings possess nests, fighters, and commanders capable of challenging it. Their encounter belongs to the difficult establishment of Horde control over a region whose existing inhabitants have not simply yielded the roads.
