Full History

The Valley of Trials stands in Durotar, the harsh land Thrall chose for the New Horde after the Third War. The land itself was not a flourishing ancient orcish homeland; it became home through the decision of refugees to remain and build a future.

The Horde’s survivors had escaped internment in the Eastern Kingdoms, crossed the sea and fought alongside new allies against the Burning Legion. In Durotar, younger orcs were asked to prove themselves not on Draenor but in the region the Horde hoped to secure permanently.

The New Horde was founded through more than victory at Mount Hyjal. Thrall had to persuade veterans and refugees that an orcish homeland would be built on principles different from those that had led the old clans into demonic service. Durotar was hard land, often lacking the fertile ground and great forests that other peoples possessed, but it offered independence. The Valley of Trials became a place where new members were expected to earn trust and understand the responsibilities of that independence. It stands in deliberate contrast to the camps where orcs had once been trained and used as weapons by the Burning Legion's servants.

The surrounding territory also shows how incomplete the Horde's settlement remained. Human soldiers associated with the campaign of Daelin Proudmoore held positions in Durotar, while centaur, harpies and other threats troubled routes outside Orgrimmar. The young society needed hunters, builders, scouts and shamans as much as warriors. A recruit leaving the valley entered a political project still under construction, not a secure empire with centuries of peace behind it. That is why the valley belongs in the historical archive: its simple trials are the opening ritual of a people trying to become citizens rather than instruments of conquest.

The valley reflects a change in orcish history from conquest abroad to the difficult work of founding a homeland. Its trials teach survival and service within a society attempting to outlive the mistakes and manipulations of the old Horde.
