Full History
When High King Anvilmar died, the uneasy peace among Ironforge's three great dwarf clans ended. The Bronzebeards, Wildhammers, and Dark Irons all sought control of the mountain kingdom; none would accept the others' claim. What began as a dispute over succession became a bitter civil war fought beneath the stone halls of Khaz Modan.
Madoran Bronzebeard commanded the strongest army of the three. Years of fighting ended with his warriors driving their cousins from Ironforge. The Bronzebeards held the ancestral city, but victory did not reunite the dwarves. Khardros Wildhammer led his people north through Dun Algaz, while Thaurissan took the Dark Irons south into the Redridge Mountains. Each displaced clan founded a kingdom of its own, carrying the memory of defeat into a new home.
The separation made another war possible. When Thaurissan later attacked Ironforge and sent Modgud against Grim Batol, Madoran again faced a threat born of the original succession crisis. His victory over the invading Dark Irons helped save Ironforge, but it did not restore the old unity. The three clans would continue to define themselves through the war and its aftermath for generations.
