Full History

When Zul'jin joined Doomhammer during the Second War, forest trolls could believe that the long struggle against Quel'Thalas had finally acquired the strength to succeed. They were heirs of the ancient Amani, whose claim to the northern woods preceded the coming of the high elves. Centuries of defeat, expelled communities, and remembered insult made the alliance emotionally powerful. But a common enemy could not guarantee that the tribes would remain united when their orcish partner failed.

The defeat of the old Horde scattered more than armies. It shattered a proposed political future for forest trolls. Zul'jin disappeared from the center of events, and the tribes no longer had either the same battlefield leader or the same reason to trust orcs. Under those conditions, divergence was not simply disobedience. Each community had to judge how it could preserve land and status after the promise of reconquest was gone.

In Blackrock Spire the Firetree and Smolderthorn remained with the renegade Dark Horde of Rend Blackhand. This was neither a reunion with Thrall nor a continuation of Zul'jin's original alliance on unchanged terms. It placed forest trolls alongside an orcish faction still bound up with Blackrock's dangerous politics and the shadow of the black dragonflight. These tribes condemned other forest trolls as deserters, while many outside Blackrock regarded their persistence as a disastrous commitment to a lost war.

The Revantusk of the Hinterlands reached nearly the opposite conclusion. They considered Thrall's revived Horde worth supporting, but did so through a pact of friendship and mutual aid rather than a total return to the old command structure. Their position drew the hatred of neighboring Vilebranch and Witherbark. Farther north, Mossflayer communities exploited the ruin left by the human plague to recover portions of old territory. The factions did not become one forest-troll nation merely because they shared an ancient imperial name.

The Vilebranch held their ground around Jintha'alor and preyed upon the Revantusk. The Witherbark spread across the Hinterlands and Arathi, contending with dwarves, Horde settlements, and other troll neighbors. The Mossflayer endured in lands increasingly claimed by the Scourge. These are different political problems. A raid that feels like another identical troll battle to an adventurer may be one episode in a long struggle over displacement, revenge, or strategic survival.

The old Amani heritage matters throughout these divisions, but heritage does not dictate a single policy. When players travel between Blackrock Spire, the Hinterlands, Arathi, and the Plaguelands, they can see several answers to the same question: what does a people do when the war that was supposed to restore an empire ends in defeat? Warcraft's original world supplies no triumphant reunion. It offers divided tribes struggling to make their different answers last.
