Quick Overview

The forest trolls' alliance with the old Horde was born from injuries much older than the Dark Portal. The Amani did not become a contented branch of the future Horde. Full History

The forest trolls' alliance with the old Horde was born from injuries much older than the Dark Portal. For generations, the Amani had watched elves fortify their presence in the north and human kingdoms rise where troll dominion once reached. Zul'jin did not need to love the orcs to recognize the opportunity their arrival created. An army powerful enough to challenge the Alliance might also be powerful enough to strike at Quel'Thalas, the enemy his people remembered more vividly than any recent human king.

The bargain was never a joining of equals who shared a common future. Orgrim Doomhammer wanted numbers, scouts, and fighters familiar with the northern forests. Zul'jin wanted the power to avenge losses stretching far beyond the Second War. Their armies could march together while pursuing different victories. The forest trolls' hatred of the elves was not a passing battlefield grievance, and the Horde's goals could shift without extinguishing it.

For a time the war seemed to offer both sides what they sought. The great northern campaign brought orcs and trolls into lands that human and elven defenders had considered secure. Ancient resentment became military action, and troll warriors could imagine reclaiming territory that had slipped away over centuries. But armies whose alliance rests on a single campaign are vulnerable to the campaign's end. When Doomhammer's offensive failed, the old injuries remained and the force assembled to exploit them began to fracture.

The Amani did not become a contented branch of the future Horde. Their war against the high elves was their own war, and most forest trolls did not remain bound to orcish interests after the Second War. Zul'jin survived as a symbol of defiance, but the old coalition was broken. The rebuilding of the Horde under Thrall would begin from different assumptions about alliance and survival. The forest trolls of Zul'Aman had little reason to believe those assumptions resolved their ancestral quarrel.

This is an important distinction for anyone encountering forest troll ruins, hostile warbands, or stories of the old Horde in the original world. Not all trolls belong to the Darkspear. Not all forces that once fought alongside orcs owe allegiance to Orgrimmar. Tribal identities and remembered wars outlast the agreements made by military leaders. In northern forests, those memories remain political facts.

By the launch of World of Warcraft, the Amani's most famous alliance is past, but its consequences are visible. Quel'Thalas has endured new disasters, the Horde has changed, and Zul'jin's people still have not recovered what they lost. Their history explains both why they once welcomed the orcs and why that welcome did not become a permanent bond.
