Quick Overview

The Eastern Plaguelands encompass ruined Stratholme and the surrounding countryside destroyed during the Third War. The Scarlet Crusade and Argent Dawn fight the Scourge by very different means, while memories of Darrowshire and other fallen communities haunt the roads. The launch world remains an unsettled battlefield, not a province already healed.

Full History

The Eastern Plaguelands contain the remains of some of Lordaeron's proudest settlements and one of its worst tragedies. Stratholme was a bustling city before plague-infected grain and the advance of the Scourge made it a place of terror. Prince Arthas's decision to purge its population during the Third War became a defining moment in his downfall. In the original game, the city's divided, undead-haunted ruins testify both to the plague and to the violence committed in the hope of halting it. The nearby forests and villages suffered as the kingdom fell, leaving a landscape in which roads still run between communities that no longer live.

Northdale, Darrowshire, and the surrounding districts carry their own stories of resistance and loss. Darrowshire in particular preserves the memory of desperate defense, as told by quests concerning the settlement's fallen inhabitants. The Scarlet Crusade remains active at its bastions, committed to exterminating the undead yet distorted by fanaticism. The Argent Dawn maintains its base at Light's Hope Chapel, drawing people who will fight the Scourge without accepting that brutality. Their coexistence shows that Lordaeron's survivors are divided not simply by strength but by competing convictions about the cost of survival.

The Scourge retains a powerful hold over the north and east, and its masters have made the territory a place of necromantic industry and military preparation. Plaguewood, the approaches to Stratholme, and the towers overlooking the ruined roads all testify to that domination. The original-world account must distinguish the Scourge present at launch from later raid developments such as Naxxramas's arrival to the playable world. It must also avoid describing the zone through the outcomes of later campaigns in which the plague is partially reversed. The Eastern Plaguelands' story is the unfinished defense of a murdered kingdom and the conflict between those who seek its salvation, vengeance, or continued enslavement.
