Quick Overview

Baron Rivendare commands the Scourge-held portion of Stratholme, the city that became a symbol of Lordaeron’s destruction. Once a nobleman, he now rides as a death knight and rules through terror and the powers of undeath. His position places him at the center of the surviving Scourge presence in the Eastern Plaguelands. The Argent Dawn regards his fall as a necessary blow against the darkness consuming the region.

Full History

Stratholme was already a place of dreadful memory before Baron Rivendare ruled within its dead streets. During the Third War, Prince Arthas discovered the plague’s advance and ordered the city purged before its people could become servants of the Scourge. The act destroyed the prince’s remaining claim to moral certainty and left the city devastated. Yet destruction did not make Stratholme safe. Its streets became a fortress of the undead, a place where the catastrophe of Lordaeron seemed to continue without end.

Rivendare belonged to the human nobility before he entered the service of the powers that ruined his homeland. His title remained, but its meaning changed. Instead of collecting rents and protecting subjects, he wielded undeath as a weapon. His black-armored presence and deathly mount suited the city he now commanded: a settlement emptied of ordinary life and filled with enemies who could raise the slain to fight again. Noble standing had offered access to influence in the kingdom; as a Scourge commander, that same capacity for command served a far darker master.

The Baron answered to the Lich King’s hierarchy and stood close to Kel’Thuzad’s surviving power in the Plaguelands. To control Stratholme was to possess more than ruined buildings. The city’s roads and strongholds gave the Scourge a staging ground against those still resisting. Patrols of undead moved through its streets, necromancers guarded their grim work, and the place remained dangerous even to veteran soldiers. Every attempt to reclaim the region had to reckon with the fact that Stratholme was not an abandoned relic but an active enemy stronghold.

Farther east, the Argent Dawn held positions from which to oppose the plague without surrendering to the hatred that consumed the Scarlet Crusade. Duke Nicholas Zverenhoff and other Argent leaders understood Rivendare as a commander whose removal could weaken the Scourge. Their struggle was not simply revenge for a burned city. It was an effort to keep the living and the free-willed undead from being overwhelmed by the armies gathering in the Plaguelands.

Rivendare’s story gives Stratholme an enemy with a face. The city remembers Arthas’s catastrophic decision, but its present condition is maintained by commanders who choose to serve the forces of death. The Baron is among the clearest of them. In his hands, the remains of an old human city become a weapon against the people who survived its fall.
