Quick Overview

Stratholme was one of Lordaeron’s great cities before the plague and Arthas’s terrible purge brought it to ruin. The disaster was a turning point in the prince’s descent toward the Lich King. The city did not die quietly afterward: undead forces now hold its streets, and Baron Rivendare commands a powerful Scourge stronghold there. Stratholme remains both a memory of an unforgivable choice and an active danger to the Plaguelands.

Full History

Stratholme was once a living city of Lordaeron, filled with households, trade and the ordinary ambitions of people who believed their kingdom could protect them. Its fate became bound to the plague of undeath when corrupted grain spread through the northern settlements. Prince Arthas arrived with Jaina Proudmoore and Uther the Lightbringer, determined to prevent the disease from devouring still more of his homeland. By then the young prince had seen enough of the plague to fear that those who appeared healthy could already be doomed.

At Stratholme, that fear became a command. Arthas ordered the city purged before its inhabitants could become undead. Uther refused to take part, and Jaina would not stand beside the prince. Their refusal left Arthas pursuing his decision without the people most capable of restraining him. He saw the deaths as a sacrifice forced upon him by necessity; others saw an act that crossed the line between defending a kingdom and destroying its people. The argument could not restore a single lost life.

The dreadlord Mal’Ganis exploited the horror, drawing Arthas deeper into vengeance. The prince followed his enemy toward Northrend, where his desperate pursuit led to Frostmourne and the Lich King’s power. Stratholme therefore marks a turning point that reaches far beyond its walls. The fall of the city helps explain the fall of Arthas himself, the murder of King Terenas, and the devastation that followed across Lordaeron.

The city’s history did not end with the purge. The Scourge claimed the ruins and turned their empty streets into a stronghold. Necromancers and undead soldiers established themselves among the remains. Baron Rivendare came to command the dead within Stratholme, serving the powers that had already ruined it. Living fanatics of the Scarlet Crusade also entered the struggle around the city, their determination to destroy undeath matched by increasingly merciless methods.

From the Eastern Plaguelands, the Argent Dawn works to resist the undead without accepting the Crusade’s indiscriminate hatred. Stratholme is one of the greatest tests of that resolve. The city’s memory contains grief, shame and warnings about what desperation can do to those who believe themselves righteous. Its streets still belong to dangerous masters, but its deepest lesson is older: a kingdom can be destroyed by an enemy and also by the choices made in trying to stop that enemy.
