Full History
Arthas killed Uther the Lightbringer while seeking the urn containing King Terenas's ashes. Once a pupil of the revered paladin, Arthas had returned to Lordaeron as a servant of the Lich King and was now gathering what Kel'Thuzad's resurrection required. The encounter made the destruction of the Silver Hand painfully personal.
Uther had resisted the purge of Stratholme and stood for a code of service Arthas had abandoned. After Frostmourne claimed the prince, Arthas murdered his father and set the Scourge against the kingdom. The urn Uther defended contained the remains of that murdered king. Taking it meant desecrating a symbol of Lordaeron's old order while eliminating one of its most honored guardians.
Arthas's victory cleared a path for the undead campaign leading toward Quel'Thalas. The urn would be used in the journey that culminated in the corruption of the Sunwell and the resurrection of Kel'Thuzad as a lich. Uther's death stands as a measure of how far the former prince had traveled from his original purpose of protecting his people.
