Full History

Arthas's expedition to Northrend began as a pursuit of Mal'Ganis but became a struggle against his own king's order to withdraw. When Terenas commanded the troops home, Arthas arranged the destruction of their ships and trapped them in the frozen north. Muradin Bronzebeard later joined the search that led to Frostmourne. The prince's determination to continue had already turned against the soldiers who trusted him.

The plague's devastation and the events at Stratholme had convinced Arthas that destroying Mal'Ganis justified extreme measures. Northrend tested that belief with hostile terrain and a campaign far from support. Denied the retreat ordered by his father, he concealed his role in burning the fleet and left the expedition without passage home. His later decision to take Frostmourne continued the same pattern of sacrificing restraints in pursuit of power over an enemy.

Frostmourne gave Arthas the weapon he sought but bound him to a darker purpose. The voyage meant to save Lordaeron became a turning point in its destruction. This chapter concerns the choices that made the return impossible before the cursed blade completed his transformation. His men lost their ships, then their prince; the kingdom would soon lose its king.
