Quick Overview

The city became a symbol of the place where a defense of the kingdom turned into an assault on the very people it was meant to protect. Its troops wear the language and symbols of righteous resistance, yet their suspicion has hardened into persecution. For the Argent Dawn, Stratholme is proof that resistance to the undead must be something more than vengeance. The city demonstrates that the aftermath of the Third War did not divide cleanly into heroes and monsters.

Full History

Stratholme had already suffered its most infamous day before the gates of the original World of Warcraft opened. As the plague crept across Lordaeron, Prince Arthas judged its citizens doomed and ordered a purge that Uther and Jaina would not accept. The city became a symbol of the place where a defense of the kingdom turned into an assault on the very people it was meant to protect. But that day did not mark the end of Stratholme's suffering.

The city remained valuable after its population fell. Streets, storehouses, walls, and defensible districts could still shelter forces willing to live amid the dead. By the game's opening, Stratholme holds enemies who are not united even in their cruelty. The Scourge maintains one part of the ruined city, and the Scarlet Crusade holds another. The struggle is not a simple war between the dead and the living. It is a contest between different visions of what ought to happen to Lordaeron next.

Under Baron Rivendare, a death knight serving the Lich King, undead power survives behind the city's shattered dignity. The Scourge does not need to restore Stratholme's civic life. It uses the place as a fortress and a warning. An army sent against the baron must contend with the remains of a city that has become adapted to its occupiers. The former marketplace and avenues of a human settlement now belong to another political order entirely.

The Scarlet Crusade claims to represent the purification of Lordaeron. Its troops wear the language and symbols of righteous resistance, yet their suspicion has hardened into persecution. Those who do not submit to its judgment can become enemies regardless of whether they serve the Scourge. The existence of a militant human order in one part of a dead city does not make that district a sanctuary. Belief, fear, and the need for control have become impossible to separate.

For the Argent Dawn, Stratholme is proof that resistance to the undead must be something more than vengeance. Argent representatives operate across old faction boundaries and confront the Scourge without adopting every cruelty justified in the name of cleansing. Their commitment does not mean victory is near. The city remains densely held, and even identifying who threatens whom can be perilous.

The original-era story leaves the question open at its most revealing point. No final liberation of Stratholme is presumed. The city demonstrates that the aftermath of the Third War did not divide cleanly into heroes and monsters. One catastrophe could leave several armed powers competing over ruins, with ordinary people absent from the debate because so many of them had already died.
