Arthas and Jaina Proudmoore followed signs of plague and secret cult activity through Lordaeron, tracing the spread of undeath to infected grain and the Cult of the Damned. Their investigation led toward Kel'Thuzad and revealed that the kingdom faced a conspiracy working inside its own towns. The prince's understanding of the enemy changed from raiders at the border to a plague among his people.
The Cult served the Lich King through mortal agents who could move through human communities without appearing as an invading army. Grain shipments threatened to carry death into places still accustomed to trusting markets, villages, and storehouses. Jaina's magical knowledge complemented Arthas's military authority, but neither could easily contain a threat that turned citizens into enemies. Their pursuit showed how the Scourge destroyed ordinary distinctions between a defended settlement and an occupied one.
Kel'Thuzad's role connected the local outbreak to a larger design, and the investigation pushed Arthas toward the choices that culminated at Stratholme. The event belongs to the decisive early portion of the Third War, when a human kingdom attempted to recognize a supernatural invasion before its own institutions collapsed. The urgency and uncertainty of those days explain, though do not excuse, the terrible decisions that followed.
