Quick Overview
Silithus is the desert outside sealed Ahn'Qiraj, where silithid hives warn of the unresolved qiraji threat. Memories of the War of the Shifting Sands and deserted settlements predate the original world's opening. Cenarion Hold and the Ahn'Qiraj raid campaigns were added after patch 1.1 and must not appear as launch-state events.
Full History
Silithus is the desert frontier of an ancient war whose consequences remain hidden beneath the sands. Long before the modern Horde and Alliance, the night elves fought the qiraji in the War of the Shifting Sands. The conflict ended with the sealing of Ahn'Qiraj behind the Scarab Wall, but the land outside did not become safe. Burrowing silithid, deserted settlements, and looming hive complexes attest to a danger that survived the closing of the gates. This history can be told from original-era accounts and the visible sealed city without treating the later player-led opening of the gates as something already accomplished.
The wilderness is marked by Hive'Ashi, Hive'Zora, and Hive'Regal, which make it clear that the insectoid creatures occupy extensive territory. Southwind Village preserves traces of earlier habitation and catastrophe, while the Crystal Vale and other distant sites suggest unexplained powers at work in the sands. The ancient qiraji threat is central to the region, but its full unfolding belongs to a time beyond the starting world state.
The patch boundary is especially important here. Cenarion Hold was added in patch 1.8 and the Ahn'Qiraj raids opened in patch 1.9; neither should appear as a functioning patch 1.1 hub or completed campaign. Earlier expeditions and Silithus itself can still be researched as an existing location, with original facilities distinguished from later content additions. Silithus at launch is therefore a landscape of warning signs rather than resolved epic battles: hives spreading through the dunes, the sealed walls of an ancient city, scattered traces of vanished communities, and the unsettling knowledge that what was imprisoned has not been destroyed.
The Scarab Wall is the clearest boundary between known history and the catastrophe feared in the future. Its existence proves that ancient defenders could imprison a danger they could not simply eliminate. The sealed barrier should be read as a historical achievement and a warning, not as evidence that later gate-opening rituals have already taken place.
