Quick Overview

The arcane teachings given to humans after the Troll Wars flourished in Dalaran. Its mages explored powers previously guarded by the high elves, but reckless practice drew the attention of demons. The resulting danger led to secret cooperation between elven and human spellcasters and ultimately to the Guardians of Tirisfal.

Full History

Human magic did not begin as an isolated invention of Dalaran's scholars. During the Troll Wars the high elves had instructed selected humans in arcane spellcraft in exchange for military help against the Amani. Those lessons endured after the immediate war had ended. As the old empire of Arathor gave way to newer centers of power, one such center became the magical city of Dalaran, where the possibilities of the arcane were pursued with growing ambition.

The city's mages expanded what humanity knew of magic, discovering ways to shape forces that earlier generations had barely understood. Yet the power that made Dalaran remarkable also carried a risk familiar from the downfall of Azshara's empire. Irresponsible spellcasting attracted the attention of demons, and their incursions threatened the lives of those who had little knowledge of what had been summoned or awakened around them.

The high elves understood the danger more clearly because their own history reached back to the Burning Legion's first invasion. Working with human practitioners, they sought means to confront demonic threats without plunging the wider population into fear. This effort led toward the secret institution known as the Order of Tirisfal, which would invest extraordinary power in individual Guardians chosen to stand against the Legion's servants.

Dalaran therefore occupied an uneasy place in human history. Its scholarship gave the kingdoms abilities that would later prove indispensable in war, while its failures reminded the world that arcane mastery did not confer automatic wisdom. During the Third War, the city became a target of the Scourge and of Archimonde himself, who destroyed it after his summoning. The city's history tied the first bargain of human wizardry to the ancient war against demons and ultimately to the disaster that brought the Legion back to Azeroth.
