Zul'jin fell into human captivity before orcish forces moved to free him during the Second War. His imprisonment disrupted the leadership of forest trolls already fighting the high elves over their ancestral lands. The rescue campaign helped bring the Amani cause into closer contact with Doomhammer's Horde.
Zul'jin's people had fought for generations against Quel'Thalas and the human allies who supported it. The Horde offered the possibility of striking those enemies with a stronger army, but the trolls had not entered the war merely to serve an orcish campaign. Capturing their leader affected the calculations of both factions. Orcs seeking cooperation could demonstrate their value by helping free a warrior whose name carried great weight among the forest tribes.
The original Troll Compendium and Warcraft II campaign preserve the capture and rescue as part of this wartime relationship. The episode explains why cooperation with the Horde could become possible despite Zul'jin's earlier reluctance. It does not imply that the interests of orcs and forest trolls became identical; their alliance would later fracture when the war ended badly for the Horde.
