Full History
Stromgarde stands on ground once occupied by Strom, capital of the first great human empire of Arathor. Under Thoradin, the united human tribes gathered power here and laid the foundations for kingdoms that would later spread across the Eastern Kingdoms.
The city remained important through the Troll Wars and the later rise of the Alliance of Lordaeron. Yet the Third War and the decline of the kingdom left Stromgarde fractured: soldiers loyal to the Trollbane house, the Syndicate, ogres and hostile trolls disputed its streets and fortifications.
When the ancient human tribes were united under Thoradin, Strom was not yet a relic of another age. It was the center from which Arathor could meet the threat of the forest trolls and consolidate disparate peoples under common command. The later partnership with the high elves and the great Troll Wars helped secure a political inheritance that outlived the first empire. Human populations spread north and south, founding other centers of power, while the original heartland remained a touchstone of legitimacy. The stones of Stromgarde stand close to the beginnings of the story told by every major northern human kingdom.
Stromgarde's later decline was made bitter by the contrast between inheritance and reality. In the Second War the kingdom of Thoras Trollbane fought as part of the Alliance and upheld the traditions of resistance to the Horde. Yet neither military memory nor historic prestige could preserve the realm when the Third War shattered the political order of northern Lordaeron. The city became divided between armed claimants, some claiming an older nobility and others holding streets by brute force. No traveler among the ruins can mistake those factions for a coherent restoration of Arathor. This is why the stronghold deserves treatment as a fallen capital rather than a generic ruined fortress.
No single faction in the original world has truly inherited all the authority of ancient Arathor. The broken city turns human imperial history into a present struggle over ruins, legitimacy and the memory of a kingdom whose achievements were once continental.
