Quick Overview

Ras Frostwhisper was once a man of Stromgarde; he became a lich serving the Scourge at Scholomance. His transformation left behind a terrible question: how much of the living man survives beneath the sorcery that sustains an undead tyrant? A keepsake from his old life becomes central to attempts to break his lich form. His story ties Stromgarde’s ruined fortunes to the necromancers of Caer Darrow.

Full History

Among the dangers housed within Scholomance, Ras Frostwhisper stands apart because a fragment of his life before undeath remains important. He is a lich, a sorcerer whose existence has been preserved and altered by necromancy. Such power makes him a threat to the living, but the same magical transformation sets him at a strange distance from the mortal person he once was.

Long before his service to the Scourge, Ras had ties to Stromgarde. That human kingdom had been forged in the old martial traditions of Arathor and had survived the great wars with its pride largely intact. Its later decline left cities contested and former loyalties broken. Ras’s connection to Stromgarde matters because it gives a place and a history to a figure who might otherwise appear to have emerged fully formed from a crypt. The lich was not created out of nothing. He had a home before he became a servant of death.

Within Scholomance, Frostwhisper exercises power under the broader Scourge command. The necromancers of Caer Darrow are not content merely to raise mindless skeletons. Their work preserves intelligence, manipulates bodies and souls, and turns knowledge into a weapon. Ras is one of its most formidable products. He demonstrates the promise that drew people to the Cult of the Damned: the ability to escape ordinary mortality. The bargain, however, leaves little room for the human purposes that once gave such people their identities.

Magistrate Marduke, who knows something of Scholomance’s terrible arts, believes the lich’s old life may be used against him. A keepsake from Stromgarde can be bound into a ritual intended to return Frostwhisper to mortality. This is no simple act of healing or forgiveness. It is a desperate attempt to strip away the protection of undeath so the sorcerer can be confronted as a vulnerable man rather than an enduring lich.

Ras Frostwhisper reveals something essential about the fall of Lordaeron and its neighboring kingdoms. The Scourge did not merely slaughter the living; it stole or twisted the skills, memories and ambitions of those it consumed. Stromgarde’s past survives in the most unexpected and dreadful place: within a creature who has devoted his remaining existence to the enemies of humanity.
