Quick Overview

Beneath the island keep of Caer Darrow lies Scholomance, a school established by the Cult of the Damned to teach necromancy. The Barov family surrendered its estate in a bargain meant to secure power beyond death, and the result became a fortress of horror. Darkmaster Gandling governs the school, while Ras Frostwhisper and other servants of the Scourge remain within. Scholomance shows how Lordaeron was undermined from within before its armies fell.

Full History

Before the plague consumed Lordaeron, Caer Darrow was the seat of House Barov. The family possessed enormous holdings and an island stronghold set amid Darrowmere Lake. Their lands symbolized the security of the old human kingdom: noble households could collect wealth, command dependents and imagine their position would endure. It was precisely that desire to endure that made them vulnerable to Kel’Thuzad’s promises.

The former mage of Dalaran had answered the Lich King’s call and begun gathering the Cult of the Damned. He offered immortality to the fearful and power to the ambitious. For the Barovs, the promise proved irresistible. They surrendered their estate and crypts to the cult, which transformed the underground chambers into Scholomance. Beneath stone halls that once expressed noble authority, secret teachers began cultivating the arts that would help destroy the kingdom.

Necromancy here was not a solitary wizard’s forbidden experiment. It was organized instruction. Students practiced in crypts, classrooms and chambers filled with the remains of the dead. The line between a lesson and an atrocity scarcely existed. Bodies could be raised, spirits manipulated and new servants created. Living cultists worked beside the undead, proving that the Scourge had uses for followers who still breathed and could pass unnoticed among the kingdoms it threatened.

Kel’Thuzad’s wider campaign carried the plague into the grain stores of Andorhal and from there across Lordaeron. Even after open warfare devastated the land, Scholomance continued its work. Darkmaster Gandling presided as headmaster. Ras Frostwhisper stood among its powerful undead masters, a lich whose former life in Stromgarde offered a slender weakness against his sorcery. The Barov family itself remained caught in the consequences of its bargain: some members served the Scourge, while the surviving heirs fought over deeds to properties scattered through a ruined country.

Scholomance explains why the Scourge is so difficult to destroy. Its armies do not rest solely upon hordes of mindless skeletons. Behind them are schools, deliberate experiments and men willing to make death their vocation. Caer Darrow’s tragedy is that its owners invited that machinery into their home. What had been a place of inherited privilege became one of the engines by which an entire kingdom was brought low.
