Full History
When Lordaeron still had a king, the Barov family seemed to have achieved the sort of permanence that nobility always promises itself. Their holdings reached well beyond their home at Caer Darrow. Villages and farms, estates and title deeds, bound portions of the northern kingdom to one household. From an island in Darrowmere Lake, wealth could appear stronger than the frightened lives of the people who worked the land.
Then Kel'Thuzad came offering a different kind of inheritance. The former mage of Dalaran was collecting servants for the Cult of the Damned, and he knew that fear of death could reach even those who possessed almost everything. The Barovs yielded their keep and its underground vaults to the cult in exchange for promises of immortality. They did not surrender a forgotten cellar. They handed a respected noble house, its servants, and its sheltering walls to people preparing a war against the living.
Below the keep, corridors intended to preserve family treasure became classrooms for necromancy. Scholomance was not merely a refuge for monsters driven from civilized lands. It was a school: a place where willing students were trained to make monsters, and where servants and other victims could be treated as materials in experiments. The change at Caer Darrow was one of the cult's most chilling successes, precisely because the surrender began as a transaction rather than a siege.
The bargain did not save its makers. Lord Alexei, Lady Illucia, and their daughter Jandice became part of the undead horror sheltered beneath their former home. The remnants of the family were scattered on different sides of the new world. Weldon remained among the living and aligned himself with the Alliance. Alexi, undead but no longer under the Scourge's command, found his place among the Forsaken. Both had reasons to believe that the family's immense property should become theirs, though the kingdom in which those legal claims once mattered had largely collapsed.
That is why old deeds still matter in the story of Scholomance. Papers naming Brill, Southshore, Tarren Mill, and Caer Darrow may seem absurd amid torture chambers and restless dead. To the surviving Barovs, however, those scraps represent the life that was lost and the fortune they still hope to reclaim. To everyone else, they reveal how completely Lordaeron's catastrophe disrupted ordinary ideas of ownership and inheritance.
By the opening of World of Warcraft, Darkmaster Gandling's instruction continues under the shadow of the Scourge. The Barov name survives, but its ancestral home is a workshop for destroying the kingdom that made the family powerful. There is no promise here that an adventurer has cleansed the school or settled the estate. The enduring truth is simpler and more terrible: in trying to purchase life without end, one family helped make death an institution.
