Quick Overview

Alexi Barov is one of the surviving heirs of the noble house whose bargain helped turn Caer Darrow into Scholomance. He remains undead, yet unlike many members of his family he has escaped the school’s control and stands among the Forsaken. His quarrel with his living brother Weldon centers on the family estates scattered across Lordaeron. The Barov inheritance shows how the collapse of a kingdom left old privileges intact even as the people who claimed them were transformed.

Full History

The Barovs once possessed wealth on a scale that most families in Lordaeron could scarcely imagine. Their holdings were not confined to a single manor. Land and deeds tied the family to Caer Darrow, Brill, Tarren Mill and Southshore. Such property brought prestige, influence and a claim on the labor of people who had never been born to noble privilege. It also gave the family something precious to fear losing.

When Kel’Thuzad offered power and immortality through the Cult of the Damned, the Barovs became entangled in his plans. Their estate at Caer Darrow and the crypts beneath it were turned over to the necromancers. The result was Scholomance, a school whose lessons included raising and binding the dead. The family’s bargain did not preserve the household as it had once existed. Members of the house were drawn into the Scourge’s service, and their ancestral home became an instrument of the kingdom’s ruin.

Alexi Barov emerged from that disaster as one of the Forsaken, an undead man no longer bound to the Scourge in the manner of the servants who remain within Scholomance. Freedom did not settle his old ambitions. He still regarded the Barov lands as a fortune worth possessing. The deeds to Brill, Caer Darrow, Tarren Mill and Southshore were more than scraps of parchment to him: they were the surviving legal shape of a family power that war and undeath had failed to erase.

His brother Weldon, who remained among the living, disputed that claim. The brothers regarded one another with open hostility, each determined to secure the inheritance. The conflict was made even stranger by the fate of their homeland. A dead noble demanded property in the villages of living or ruined Lordaeron, while his living brother sought deeds guarded by their corrupted ancestral house. Both looked backward to a social order that the plague had shattered.

Alexi’s story is not a tale of noble redemption. It is an example of how the Forsaken retained pieces of their former identities, including pride, resentment and greed. He has escaped one master, but the old hunger for family wealth continues to govern him. Through Alexi, Scholomance becomes not just a place of necromantic horror but the wreckage of a household whose bargain infected an entire region.
