Full History
Stromgarde inherited an older pride than the surviving crowns of Lordaeron. Its place in the Arathi Highlands recalled the human realm of Arathor, whose power once united scattered tribes and helped shape the northern kingdoms. Under Thoras Trollbane, Stromgarde's soldiers remained among the more willing defenders of the Alliance during the Second War. The kingdom understood the danger of allowing the Horde to move unhindered through the north, and its reputation rested on frontiers held by armed men rather than on the comfort of distant courts.
Victory over the Old Horde did not make those frontiers peaceful. The Alliance frayed, neighboring kingdoms chose different futures, and the old system of common defense weakened. Stromgarde's immense keep remained a physical symbol of strength, but the surrounding Highlands became harder to govern. Bandits and opportunistic forces pressed inward; ogres took advantage of the region's disorder; and the surviving defenders were forced to fight for ground that earlier generations had treated as unquestionably theirs.
The Syndicate's movement from the mountains of ruined Alterac brings a political enemy into the Highlands. These masked exiles are not just random robbers. They carry the memory of Alterac's punishment after its betrayal and seek authority or wealth by force. Against Stromgarde's remaining soldiers, their raids prolong the Second War's political consequences. The intrusion of ogres makes the conflict less like a conventional succession struggle and more like a slow dismemberment, in which separate forces occupy different portions of a once-formidable human stronghold.
In the original zone, the surviving military presence around Refuge Pointe and Stromgarde Keep reveals a fractured kingdom rather than an orderly capital. A visitor can encounter defenders still loyal to the old cause, enemy warriors holding parts of the ruined fortress, and the aftereffects of the wider conflict reaching down into farmsteads. Even private vendettas are folded into that geography: the Forsaken woman Genavie Callow seeks revenge against the Dabyrie family on an Arathi farm, showing how the plague and human displacement have created enemies far beyond the former boundaries of Lordaeron.
Stromgarde should not be described as already restored to glory or as having completed a political future established in later expansions. Its launch-era identity is a hard and unfinished struggle. The descendants of an ancient human union hold a fraction of what they once governed. Linking the story to Thoradin, Thoras Trollbane, Danath Trollbane, Alterac, the Syndicate, and the Arathi Highlands restores its proper place in the wider history: an old frontier kingdom surviving in pieces while the world around it changes.
