Full History

The old accounts of Duskwood speak often of beasts in the trees and graves that will not stay quiet. Yet one of its darkest histories begins with a man whose work should have placed him among the most trusted people in a community: a teacher. Stalvan Mistmantle traveled through human settlements as a scholar and tutor, eventually serving at the schoolhouse in Moonbrook and later in the household of the Flintridge family. Documents scattered across Westfall, Stormwind and Elwynn would later help reconstruct the ruin of his life.

The Flintridges employed Stalvan to tutor their children, including their daughter Tilloa. He became obsessed with her, interpreting kindness and ordinary gestures through a fantasy that did not reflect the young woman's feelings. A flower given in simple affection as a student might offer to a familiar teacher became, in his mind, proof of something more. When Tilloa's family planned a future that did not include him, he responded not with acceptance but with furious resentment.

The quest trail reveals the horror in stages. Letters and fragments of his journal lead investigators from the records of Darkshire back through earlier residences. What first seems an unsettling rumor becomes a pattern: growing possessiveness, the rejection of a fantasy, then violence. The account attributes the deaths associated with the Flintridge household to Stalvan, although it does not describe every minute of the killings in a single uncontested record. The evidence is assembled by the player, piece after piece, until the teacher's cultivated exterior has fallen away.

Stalvan retreated into the darkness of Duskwood, settling at Manor Mistmantle northeast of Darkshire. There the figure behind the old papers had become a threat in the present, his isolation and madness making the home as dangerous as the cursed woods around it. The village's concern was not a simple monster hunt. Darkshire's residents had to understand who Stalvan was before they could know why his name mattered. Madame Eva's forebodings and Clerk Daltry's records turn a local fear into an investigation crossing several zones.

His story matters because Duskwood's horrors are not all created by spells or ancient enemies. Stalvan was a person given opportunities to teach and live within ordinary human society. His choices destroyed the trust placed in him. The launch-era quest line asks travelers to uncover that truth, not to romanticize his obsession or excuse his violence as the work of a curse. Manor Mistmantle stands as the last, frightening endpoint of a trail that began with a schoolhouse and a family who welcomed a stranger into their home.
