Quick Overview
Deadwind Pass is dominated by Karazhan, the abandoned tower of the Guardian Medivh. His corruption by Sargeras and role in opening the Dark Portal connect the haunted landscape directly to the First War.
Full History
Deadwind Pass lies between Duskwood and the Swamp of Sorrows, but few travelers choose to linger among its skeletal trees and dry ravines. Its enduring landmark is Karazhan, the tower associated with Medivh, the last Guardian of Tirisfal. Medivh's possession by Sargeras and his part in opening the Dark Portal drew the tower into the history of the First War. Even before that war, his own life had been shaped by dangerous secrets and the burden of the Guardians' power. Those original-era events matter far more to this zone than later theories explaining every curse in the soil.
When Medivh's former friends and allies finally confronted him, the tower became inseparable from the moral cost of the Guardian's corruption. In the wider Warcraft story, the opening of the Dark Portal brought the orcish Horde into Azeroth and helped destroy Stormwind. Karazhan stands as a reminder that the catastrophe began not only with armies marching from another world but also with betrayal and possession within Azeroth's own greatest magical order. The abandoned roads around it make the contrast especially stark: the central tower is imposing, yet the nearby country seems drained of the life expected in lands so close to settled Redridge and Elwynn.
Its ancient tower may be described as a place of historical importance and rumor, but encounters, new occupants, and quests first shown in that later expansion cannot be transplanted backwards. Nor should later artifact lore about a particular ancient harvester of souls be used to explain the name of the region. Deadwind Pass is already compelling as the landscape surrounding Medivh's tragic legacy, where one man's corrupted power helped open the age of world-spanning wars.
