Full History
Jitters never set out to become a historian of Duskwood's troubles. He became one because he survived long enough to write down what he had seen. His story begins at Roland's Doom, where he discovered a strange weapon known as the Scythe of Elune. The find drew him into dangers he did not understand. Strange wolf-men appeared, companions died, and the man who escaped the site carried fear with him across the darkening countryside.
His journey led through Darkshire, where he sought shelter and obtained paper on which to record his experience. A journal was a small defense against what had happened: it could not keep monsters away, but it allowed him to set down a trail for anyone willing to read it later. He continued moving until he reached the Yorgen Farmstead, where he hid in a barn. There he witnessed a second catastrophe. Riders from Deadwind Pass descended on Sven Yorgen's family and killed them while Sven was absent.
To Jitters, the murders must have seemed connected to the terrible scythe that had already upended his life. He buried his writing near an old stump and slipped away, afraid of being found. Sven later noticed traces of the shadowy visitor without learning the whole story. The concealed journal became the first major clue in Sven's search for justice, linking the ruined farm to Roland's Doom and the broader mystery surrounding the Scythe of Elune.
Jitters's importance lies in his imperfect testimony. He knew what he had seen, but he did not understand all the supernatural causes behind it. In the original quest sequence, the player has to follow pieces of information from one person to another, piecing together the chain. That makes Jitters unusually valuable. He is not a powerful quest-giver directing events from safety, nor the villain responsible for everything. He is a witness who has been made unreliable by terror but whose record is too significant to ignore.
The launch-era tale leaves room for uncertainty about the deepest history of the scythe and the true identities and motives of every rider. Such unknowns should remain unknown rather than be filled with later stories. What is certain is that a frightened survivor preserved the evidence needed to connect several seemingly unrelated horrors. In Duskwood, the difference between a rumor and an investigation was a book buried beside a farm, and Jitters was the man who left it there.
