Quick Overview
Aegwynn chose the mage Nielas Aran to father Medivh, intending to pass the power of the Guardian to her son. She did not realize that the spirit of Sargeras had taken refuge within her. Medivh's inheritance placed immense magical strength and a hidden demonic influence in the same life, with consequences that reached the Dark Portal.
Full History
Aegwynn had served as Guardian of Tirisfal far beyond the ordinary limits expected by the Council. She increasingly rejected the idea that its members should govern the fate of the power she wielded. Determined to choose her own successor, she entered a union with Nielas Aran, a mage of great ability, and gave birth to Medivh. Her plan was to pass on the powers of the Guardian through her son, bypassing the customary direction of the order.
The inheritance was more dangerous than Aegwynn knew. Earlier, she had defeated a manifestation of Sargeras, but the demon lord's spirit had secretly survived within her. That presence passed to Medivh along with his mother's great magical power. The boy therefore carried a contradiction from birth: he was the heir to Azeroth's secret champion against demons and also the hidden refuge of the enemy the Guardians had tried to defeat.
Medivh's childhood revealed how difficult that power was to contain. A magical crisis overwhelmed him, and his father Nielas died during the upheaval. Medivh fell into a prolonged coma and was cared for while those around him struggled to understand his condition. Upon awakening he retained his extraordinary gifts, but the conflict buried within him would eventually emerge in actions reaching far beyond his home.
The mature Medivh would enter dealings with Gul'dan that helped make possible the Dark Portal and the invasion of Azeroth by the orcs. Khadgar, Garona, and Anduin Lothar later confronted the corrupted Guardian at Karazhan. The story of Medivh's birth thus lies at a turning point between the age of the Guardians and the wars of the Horde. Aegwynn's attempt to secure an independent successor inadvertently made her son central to the Legion's long designs.
