Quick Overview

Blackhand rose as the public warchief of the first great Horde, commanding warriors from many clans. His appointment gave the growing war machine a single visible authority while Gul'dan's Shadow Council operated behind it. Orgrim Doomhammer eventually overthrew him as the Horde's internal power struggles intensified.

Full History

The orcish clans had once followed separate chieftains whose authority rested on local tradition, kinship, and success in war. The Legion's plans required something different: a unified force capable of sustained conquest. Blackhand of the Blackrock clan became the warchief placed at the front of that force. He was a formidable military figure, but his rise cannot be separated from the hidden influence of Gul'dan's Shadow Council.

With Blackhand as the Horde's commander, the orcs grew more dangerous to Draenor's inhabitants. Warlocks encouraged the clans' militarization, and many warriors embraced powers they had not understood in earlier generations. The public authority of the warchief concealed a political structure in which Gul'dan and his allies could direct strategy without openly bearing responsibility for every decision. The result combined military discipline with deep internal manipulation.

Blackhand's Horde crossed the Dark Portal and brought war to the Kingdom of Azeroth. The conflict with Stormwind gave the clans a common enemy and opened the possibility of conquest beyond their own damaged world. Yet victory did not make the warchief secure. Orgrim Doomhammer came to regard Blackhand's leadership and the warlocks' domination as intolerable, and he killed the warchief before taking command himself.

Orgrim's rise altered the balance between the Horde's armies and its hidden masters, but it did not erase the violence produced under Blackhand. The first warchief remains significant because he embodied the shift from independent clans to a conqueror's military state. His overthrow was not the end of the Horde; it was the beginning of a new phase in which political control and the legacy of Gul'dan's manipulation remained contested.
