Full History
Not all of Stormwind's enemies waited beyond the city walls. Some understood that a kingdom damaged by war could be weakened more effectively from its throne room than from an army camp. As the citizens of Stormwind tried to rebuild their confidence, Lady Katrana Prestor occupied a privileged place among its rulers. She appeared to be an influential noblewoman, close enough to the business of the crown to bend decisions from within. King Varian Wrynn was absent, Prince Anduin was a child, and Highlord Bolvar Fordragon carried the burden of protecting the dynasty.
Behind Prestor's human appearance was Onyxia, a daughter of Deathwing and sister of Nefarian. Her concealed identity transformed ordinary intrigue into an attack on the kingdom itself. The Black Dragonflight did not need to burn Stormwind from the air while it could distort the choices of the people charged with governing the city. Other threats, such as the Defias rebellion and instability in the countryside, gained power in a kingdom whose highest advisers could be deceived. Not every political crisis must be assigned to Onyxia alone; the original historical record shows a vulnerable realm with real human grievances as well as a dragon's interference.
Marshal Reginald Windsor's investigation offers the decisive link between suspicion and proof. Drawn through Blackrock Depths and the dangerous world around Blackrock Mountain, the quest chain gathers evidence about the dragon's true identity and brings Windsor back toward Stormwind. He knows that an accusation made casually against a favored court figure will likely fail. Instead, he confronts the city and its leaders directly, insisting that Lady Prestor is Onyxia in disguise. The *Great Masquerade* dramatizes this confrontation, and Bolvar is forced to face the power that has clouded his judgment.
Windsor's exposure of the dragon costs him his life, but it changes the meaning of the palace. The noblewoman who seemed to offer advice is revealed as the enemy; the realm has been endangered precisely because so few suspected danger from someone already inside its circles of trust. The affair also points outward again. Onyxia's sibling Nefarian operates from the Blackrock region, where old orcish powers and dragon experiments threaten the balance of the eastern continent. Court intrigue and mountain warfare are two fronts of a larger black dragon problem.
The original account does not require later narratives about Varian's adventures or a complete restoration of every institution. At its launch-era horizon, Stormwind has learned how vulnerable victory can be. Its capital was rebuilt after the Horde's destruction, yet the most serious betrayal came from someone welcomed near its throne. The story links Anduin, Bolvar, Varian, Onyxia, Nefarian, Windsor, Blackrock Depths, Stormwind and the Defias crisis, restoring the missing political thread that connects a royal mystery with a dragon's long deception.
