Quick Overview
Blackrock Stronghold is an orcish fortress in the northern Burning Steppes, close to the great mountain where the old Horde once made its stand. The Blackrock clan maintains a power base here outside the contested halls of Blackrock Spire. A traitor named Grark Lorkrub finds protection among its orcs after passing information about Kargath’s operations to their enemies. The stronghold reveals that the old wars did not end when the Horde’s main armies were defeated.
Full History
Blackrock Mountain was already a place of terror before the orcs took it. Ragnaros had risen beneath the earth and transformed the surrounding country into the Burning Steppes and Searing Gorge. When the old Horde carried its wars into the Eastern Kingdoms, the mountain became an invaluable fortress. Blackrock Spire rose over the roads between Stormwind and Khaz Modan, and the great battles of the Second War ended in the shadow of its volcanic slopes.
The fall of the old Horde did not empty the region. Blackrock orcs continued to inhabit the mountain and the country around it, refusing to become part of the new order established far to the west. Their stronghold in the northern Burning Steppes is a reminder that a defeated army can remain dangerous when its survivors possess walls, supply routes and a reason to fight. Its existence complicates the idea of a single Horde. The orcs here are not the same political force as the New Horde under Thrall, and their enemies do not always distinguish between them.
The fortress is also a place where information can change hands. Grark Lorkrub, a traitor to the forces operating from Kargath, was caught giving the Blackrock orcs details of his former side’s activities. He fled into the Burning Steppes and found refuge in their great stronghold. Lexlort’s pursuit of Grark requires the fugitive to be captured and escorted back through Blackrock Mountain. The episode shows that the surviving Blackrocks remain organized enough to shelter informants and exploit rivalries within the wider orcish world.
To the east, the Firegut ogres maintain Dreadmaul Rock and support Blackrock operations by defending valuable ground and routes. Their leader Gor’tesh is found at an orcish structure west of the ogre mountain, a sign of cooperation that reaches beyond occasional raiding. To the south, Redridge Mountains remains exposed to pressure from orcs who can strike toward Stormwind’s approaches. Within the mountain itself, other powers hold their own domains: Dark Iron dwarves in the depths and the black dragonflight in the upper reaches. No single ruler controls every threat that emerges from Blackrock.
Blackrock Stronghold therefore tells the story of an unfinished war. The Alliance may have won the great campaigns that broke the old Horde, and Thrall may have founded a different future for many orcs, but the fortress survives between those histories. It holds soldiers who still answer to older loyalties, allies whose violence reaches across the steppes, and secrets worth stealing. Its walls mark the distance between the end of a war on a battlefield and the end of the forces that fought it.
