Quick Overview

The Dark Iron dwarves fought their Bronzebeard and Wildhammer kin in the War of the Three Hammers. Defeat drove their ruler Thaurissan to summon a power he could not control, bringing Ragnaros into Azeroth and transforming the land around Blackrock Mountain. The resulting catastrophe left many Dark Irons bound to the Firelord beneath the mountain. Their history became a warning about how a struggle for dominion could end in enslavement.

Full History

The Dark Iron dwarves were one of the three great clans whose rivalry divided the kingdom once united beneath the mountain kings of Ironforge. Their ambition brought them into conflict with the Bronzebeards and Wildhammers. When disputes became open war, Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan and his wife Modgud led attacks on the holdings of their kin.

Modgud carried war against the Wildhammers of Grim Batol, where her shadow magic brought terror even as Khardros Wildhammer's defenders held their ground. Khardros killed her, but the fortress remained cursed, and its inhabitants eventually abandoned it. Elsewhere, the Dark Iron struggle against Ironforge ended in defeat, leaving Thaurissan with little hope of victory by ordinary means.

In desperation he summoned a being of elemental fire. Ragnaros answered, but not as a servant who could be commanded. The Firelord's emergence devastated the land, raised Blackrock Mountain and changed the fate of the Dark Iron. Many survived only to live beneath the rule of the power their leader had called upon, in a kingdom associated with Blackrock Depths and the burning heart of the mountain.

The old war's consequences endured beyond the generation that fought it. The Bronzebeards remained in Ironforge, and the Wildhammers built a new life in the Hinterlands. The Dark Iron, meanwhile, were entangled with elemental power and the competing forces that gathered around Blackrock Mountain. Their bitter legacy was not simply that they had lost a war; it was that the final attempt to win it had cost them their freedom.
