Full History
Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan led the Dark Iron dwarves south after their defeat in the struggle for Ironforge. In the Redridge Mountains he established a stronghold bearing his name, creating a rival center of power beyond the Bronzebeards' reach. The settlement gave the exiled clan a base from which to continue its ambitions.
Thaurissan's claim grew out of the collapse of Anvilmar's united kingdom. The Bronzebeards kept Ironforge, and the Wildhammers departed for Grim Batol, while the Dark Irons refused to accept their exclusion as final. Their ruler commanded powerful sorcery and maintained a fierce rivalry with the other clans. The southern fortress was therefore not merely a refuge for displaced people, but the seat of plans to reverse the outcome of the civil war.
Those plans led to coordinated attacks against Ironforge and Grim Batol, with Thaurissan and his wife Modgud directing separate fronts. When their campaign failed, Thaurissan's attempt to call upon destructive power brought Ragnaros into the world and transformed the mountain region forever. His earlier settlement marks the stage when political defeat became preparation for magical catastrophe.
