Quick Overview

The Badlands surround the ancient vaults of Uldaman, whose relics draw dwarven explorers searching for their origins. Dark Iron dwarves, troggs, and competing expeditions contest the harsh valleys, while the Horde maintains a foothold at Kargath. The original evidence establishes remarkable buried discoveries without fully explaining their makers.

Full History

The Badlands are a wilderness of ochre ridges and parched gullies south of Loch Modan, but the most important things in their history lie beneath the ground. The titan-associated ruins of Uldaman have drawn generations of dwarven explorers seeking answers to the origin of their people. The original game presents ancient stone guardians, buried vaults, the Discs of Norgannon, and artifacts of a civilization vastly older than Ironforge. Those clues invite study without requiring later reinterpretations of titan history. The dwarven excavations thus link the dusty Badlands to questions once thought beyond the reach of recorded human or dwarven memory.

The land above is contested. The Horde maintains a presence around Kargath, while Dark Iron dwarves, troggs, and scattered hostile creatures occupy the rocks, caves, and digsites. The Dark Iron clan's history is tied to the War of the Three Hammers and to the disastrous summoning of Ragnaros in the neighboring Blackrock region. Every confrontation with its agents is part of the longer struggle between dwarf kingdoms and their estranged kin, rather than a simple dispute over ore. Excavators risk both those living enemies and the guardians of long-buried chambers.

Travelers leaving the northern passes soon discover why the Badlands have remained thinly settled. Unforgiving terrain separates camps and makes any supply route vulnerable. The ancient fortress of Angor Fortress, the excavation sites, and the routes toward Searing Gorge bind the region to the darker contest for Blackrock Mountain. It is also a place of historical uncertainty: the Discs and the surviving vaults are evidence of ancient workmanship, but speculative claims about every machine or stone in Uldaman must not be converted into certainties. The Badlands should be read as an archaeological frontier where the sources establish both real discoveries and unresolved questions.

The most intriguing feature of Uldaman is not the treasure rumored inside, but the suggestion that dwarf history may have to be reconsidered. A researcher can follow the Discs of Norgannon, the ruins, and the stone guardians as separate clues without pretending that the evidence has already been fully interpreted.
