Quick Overview

The troggs emerged from the deep places beneath Khaz Modan, where ancient titan works concealed creatures related to the earliest history of the dwarves. Excavations at Uldaman disturbed populations long cut off from the surface. Their attacks became a danger to dwarven settlements and later contributed to the catastrophe at Gnomeregan. The troggs' emergence joined two histories that dwarves and gnomes had once treated separately: the discovery of their ancient past and the sudden collapse of their modern security.

Full History

Beneath the mountains of Khaz Modan lay the works of powers older than the kingdoms of dwarves and humans. The troggs belonged to this buried world. Their origins were bound to ancient titan experiments and the history preserved within Uldaman, though much about the earliest experiments remained unknown to the peoples who first encountered them.

When dwarven excavators opened long-sealed depths, they discovered that the old chambers were not empty. Troggs emerged and attacked explorers and nearby settlements. To the dwarves, the invasion was more than an unfamiliar danger from the underground: it was a warning that the search for ancestral knowledge could awaken threats the present age did not know how to contain.

The disaster later reached Gnomeregan, the underground city of the gnomes. Troggs broke into the kingdom in overwhelming numbers, forcing its engineers and defenders into a desperate struggle. The attack helped set the stage for Sicco Thermaplugg's catastrophic plan to drive out the invaders by flooding parts of the city with radiation. That decision poisoned Gnomeregan, left many inhabitants transformed or dead, and drove surviving gnomes to seek refuge with their dwarven allies at Ironforge.

The troggs never had to command a great empire to change the history of their neighbors. Their arrival exposed vulnerabilities beneath two of the most inventive civilizations in the Eastern Kingdoms. A search for the past became a struggle to survive its return.
