Full History
Gnomeregan was meant to be the safest possible expression of gnomish ingenuity. Beneath the snowy reaches of Dun Morogh lay an engineered city whose machines did the work that walls and towers performed elsewhere. Its people valued invention, problem-solving, and the belief that almost any threat could be met with a clever design. The city was closely tied to its dwarven neighbors in Ironforge, but it remained unmistakably its own creation. That confidence made its fall all the more devastating.
The first disaster came from the troggs, creatures that poured into the gnomish city and drove its inhabitants toward desperate measures. The answer proposed within Gnomeregan relied on the same technological power that had made the settlement possible: a toxic countermeasure intended to clear the invaders. Instead the gas poisoned the city itself. Large numbers of gnomes became irradiated and violent, turning familiar workshops, passages, and machines into places of mortal danger. Many survivors escaped to the protection of the dwarves, carrying with them a loss that felt impossible for a people so accustomed to solving practical problems.
Then came the political betrayal. Sicco Thermaplugg, once a trusted figure in the engineering establishment, seized control of what remained inside the ruined city. High Tinker Gelbin Mekkatorque and the displaced gnomes learned that the calamity was not simply the fault of a terrible miscalculation in battle. The surviving machinery served an enemy within, and the person who had helped shape their technological world now occupied it as a would-be ruler. In Ironforge, exile and disbelief gradually hardened into the determination to expose Thermaplugg and return to the city.
The original *Grand Betrayal* quest sends travelers back into the poisoned complex on Mekkatorque's behalf. It gives the danger a recognizable face without pretending that defeating one engineer instantly restores a great subterranean civilization. Elsewhere, related quests involving radioactive fallout and the survivors' attempts to understand its effects show that Gnomeregan's wounds are physical and persistent. What remains below the mountain is not just a dungeon of mechanical hazards; it is a ruined homeland filled with infected former citizens and the remains of technologies that can no longer be trusted.
For the gnomes of the original World of Warcraft, Ironforge is refuge, not a replacement. Their friendship with the dwarves has given them shelter, while Gnomeregan continues to loom beneath their lives. The story connects the city, Dun Morogh, Ironforge, troggs, Thermaplugg, and Mekkatorque. It also raises a cruel question for the larger archive: what happens when a people whose identity rests on invention discovers that ingenuity can be turned into the instrument of their exile?
