Full History
Ironforge sheltered gnomes who escaped the fall of Gnomeregan. Trogg attacks and a disastrous release of radiation had made the gnomes' underground city uninhabitable for many of its people. The dwarves' hospitality gave the survivors a place to preserve their community while they faced the loss of their homeland.
Gnomish inventors had long aided the Alliance with machines, reconnaissance craft, and technical skill. Yet those talents could not prevent catastrophe when the troggs breached their own defenses. An attempt to clear the invaders with radiation inflicted tremendous suffering on those it was intended to save. Refugees crossed into the dwarven capital carrying their knowledge, tools, and grief, becoming a visible part of Ironforge's life.
Their presence changed the city's society without ending the gnomes' desire to recover Gnomeregan. The original World of Warcraft setting presents a displaced people alongside a dwarven ally, not a city already restored through heroic action. The refuge speaks to the Alliance's ability to offer shelter even when it cannot immediately reverse a member people's disaster.
