Gnomeregan had long stood beside Ironforge as a neighboring center of ingenuity, its machinery reflecting the gnomes' confidence in invention and experiment. That confidence was tested when troggs surged into the underground city. Their invasion overwhelmed defenses meant to protect workshops and homes, forcing High Tinker Gelbin Mekkatorque to consider a desperate response.
The release of toxic radiation was intended to stop the attackers. Instead, it made much of Gnomeregan deadly to the very people it was supposed to save. Large numbers of gnomes fled, while others remained behind or were transformed by the catastrophe. Mekkatorque's people had lost more than a city: the failure of their greatest defensive gamble had taken their homeland from them.
The Bronzebeard dwarves opened Ironforge to the survivors. Gnomish engineers and families found shelter among allies whose friendship had endured for generations, and the disaster deepened the bond between the two peoples. Exile did not end the gnomes' determination to recover Gnomeregan, but for the time being that ambition had to coexist with the need to rebuild lives in another kingdom's halls.
