Quick Overview
Dark Iron forces continued to contest the regions around Blackrock Mountain long after their defeat in the War of the Three Hammers. Their presence brought them into conflict with other dwarven clans and with outsiders drawn to the mountain. Older clan hatreds endured alongside the newer struggle for control of Blackrock.
Full History
When Thaurissan's summoning unleashed Ragnaros, the Dark Iron dwarves lost their king and much of their independence. The upheaval devastated their southern kingdom but did not erase them. Surviving Dark Irons remained entrenched around Blackrock Mountain and in nearby strongholds, tied to the firelord whose arrival had remade the land.
Their enemies remembered what had brought them there. The Bronzebeards had defended Ironforge against the exiled clan, while the Wildhammers had lost Grim Batol after Modgud's assault. Neither grievance disappeared with the passage of generations. To these dwarves, Dark Iron control in the south remained a living continuation of the old war.
Blackrock Mountain also drew orcish powers, creating a struggle more complicated than an ancient family feud. Dark Iron holdings, Horde remnants, and elemental servants pressed against one another within and around the same region. Control of the mountain would never rest solely on a claim inherited from the three clans' original division.
